Sustainable Healthcare and Climate Aotearoa - Climate change and the infinite game

Everyone reading this will have been told, and perhaps told others, that climate change is urgent. We must do something now or the world as we know it will collapse. This rhetoric, however, does not match our experience. For most of us life is as it has always been – sure, the odd public and personal crisis comes along, but they don’t have much to do with the climate. So gradually all those impassioned pleas of urgency sound like hysterical echoes – true maybe, but convincing, no. Covid-19 - now that was urgent, everything changed in two days. We got it.

In this talk Niki will argue that to approach climate change as the long-haul problem it is, we need to stand back and ask four essential questions. What is the problem? On whose authority should I act? How do I speak to a 10-year old? Why do I feel anxious?  She imagines a response to climate change that invites everyone in; makes room for beauty, joy and compassion; and that insists our way of life must radically change.
